The weather...the wood

Posted by Malou at 9/17/2009 08:53:00 AM
We picked up a wood stove a couple of years back to try to offset our heat bill. After buying the wood stove and having the chimney installed it was quite an expensive adventure. The energy savings were immense because we're not using our gas for the furnish. We have quite a few extremely large cherry trees on our property so the next thing we bought was a chainsaw, an axe and the splitting wedge. So there was no cost for the wood just a lot of big effort in cutting, splitting, hauling, and stacking. But what we didn't know at first is that the wood should dry for at least a year . If you don't do this when you burn the wood it creates large amounts of creosote that is an oily sticky substance that gets stuck in your chimney. If it ignites in your chimney they call it a chimney fire that can burn your house down. So word of advice make sure your wood is dry and make sure that you clean your chimney on a regular basis.
